Dermabrasion Treatment

The Dermabrasion treatment is a deeper treatment than the simpler Microdermabrasion session. The process levels or injures the top layer of skin by removing it. As it heals, new fresh skin is formed to replace it.

A Dermabrasion treatment is a great option for addressing:

  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles around the mouth
  • Superficial scars
  • Tattoo Removal

Is the treatment right for me?

Dermabrasion works great on fair skin, patients with darker skin experience scars and discoloration.

If you have fine lines around the mouth and acne scars that have not improved with the simpler microdermabrasion treatment, you may want to consider a Dermabrasion consultation with a provider.

Does it hurt?

The treatment will require numbing and medication to make it more comfortable during and after the treatment.  A small area at a time is treated, as each layer is removed, the doctor will stop the bleeding and use topical ointment to cover the treated area.

How long is the recovery period?

Each patient is different, the recovery also depends on the size of the area treated and how deep the treatment was.

New skin can take up to 8 days to form, during this time you may or may not need pain medication.  You may also experience swelling, which your provider will address with specific medication.

Most patients return to normal activity quickly.  The new skin formed skin is red and may remain that way for several weeks.  Avoiding the sun is a must.

What are the risks associated with a Dermabrasion treatment?

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Hyperpigmentation (darker spots on the skin)

Infection is one of the key concerns, proper care is important; your provider will give you clear instructions on proper care which includes a cleansing regimen, topical ointment for better healing.

Your new formed skin is very sensitive; your instructions will also include protecting the new formed skin from the sun and the environment.

Your provider will see you several times after the treatment to follow your healing process and avoid any issues.

If you’re considering a Dermabrasion treatment, it’s important to have a consultation with your doctor.  The doctor may recommend other cosmetic procedures in addition to the Dermabrasion session in order to achieve the best results for your skin type and need for treatment.
